Academic sessions at Steel City Squash focus on homework completion and skill development. Staff visit schools and meet with teachers to stay abreast of current assignments and projects, upcoming tests and deadlines, and overall student development in school. During Steel City Squash programs, staff and volunteers work one-on-one with students to ensure that each student not only completes his or her homework, but does so accurately and with a complete understanding of the skill. Each student's homework is checked for accuracy before he or she is able to move on to a different homework or skill development activity.
AFTER SCHOOL
Squash is the "hook" to get students excited about being at Steel City Squash. Squash is a sport played world-wide but has limited access in the United States. Every student that joins Steel City Squash is stepping on the squash court for the very first time. Through regular training sessions on every program day, students develop a love for the game and a commitment to hard work, getting fit, and competing at a high level.
ACADEMICS
SQUASH
The after school program serves 4th-8th grade students from our partner schools, Miller African-Centered Academy, St. Benedict the Moor School, Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy, Milliones University Prep, and The Neighborhood Academy. Students are expected to attend at least two practices per week, and participate in Saturday programs at least once a month. All students participate in both academic sessions and squash/fitness sessions. This program is the cornerstones of growth for our students.
