At its core, the Summer Discover Program is an academic enrichment program designed specifically to address gaps in PA Common Core skills. Each student participates in STEM and literacy courses, complete with homework assignments, in order to combat "summer slide". However, students also get to play squash, go swimming and play team oriented, staff-led, games every day.

The field trips were some of the best highlights of the summer; ranging from a day of fun at Kennywood Amusement Park to explore Pittsburgh's history at the Heinz History Center. Every student found something new to love about their city and their teammates.

By the end of the five-week program, students do not want it to be over, despite the hard work and effort put into their summer academic lessons. They left campus on their final Friday asking when practice will start for the year so they can get back into the 'swing' of things and onto the courts. Though they were provided opportunities to advance their academic abilities, more importantly they strengthed their love of and dedication to Steel City Squash.

SUMMER DISCOVERY

THE SUMMER DISCOVERY PROGRAM
Steel City Squashers do not have the summer months off, as they are committed to working towards success both in the classroom and on the squash court. SCS student-athletes spend their summer months honing their academic and squash skills through participation in activities in and around Pittsburgh. Students practice squash daily, go on field trips and also participate in Pitts' Kids Summer Camp, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, where they have opportunities such as receiving swim lessons, taking taekwondo, and learning how to rock-climb on Pitt's indoor climbing wall.
Goals:

  • To provide academic enrichment designed to address gaps in PA Common Core skills

  • To develop a genuine interest in each student in furthering their education and knowledge of the world around them

  • To grow a love of and dedication to Steel City Squash
